“Dissappointing”
Travelled to Yala with wife and four kids. Must admit that the location is breath-taking, and regular visits from local wildlife made for a very authentic experience. The facilities however were very disappointing. The buildings, rooms, pool area, and facilities in general seemed run down and in desperate need of a refurbishment. The beach is amazing, but not fit for swimming due to the size of the waves and strong current. Definitely fell well below my expectations when considering the price. Staff were friendly.

“Good stay, expensive meals and staff not well trained.”
It was a good stay, but because of remote location of the resort, it wasn’t possible to explore the areas around the resort. And very limited ability to get around. You need a private vehicle or call $$$ cabs to get around. Comfortable stay with a nice infinity pool and small gym. No other resort features. Staff were nice, but not very prompt when asked for things and they really need etiquette training. The rooms had a rustic feel and were nice and clean. Food was $$$ and western food was not good at all, although Sri Lankan food wasn’t too bad.

“Amazing views”
Property is located right on the beachfront which meant amazing views. In the nighttime, animals (wild boars, buffaloes and rabbits) surrounding the property come out to chomp on the lawn which was an amazing sight. A hotel staff will be there to shoo them off though. We cannot comment on the breakfast spread, however hotel staff kindly packed a breakfast box for each of us for our early morning safari tour. Service at the only restaurant was terribly slow. We were the only ones there for an early dinner at 5.30pm yet it took an hour for our food to be served. The pool wasn't very clean either. All in all, still a decent stay.

“Perfect relax location at the sea, to visit Yala Park.”
The place is realy in the middle of nowhere, close to the entrance of Yala Park. The view on the beach and sea is perfect. No restaurants in the neighbourhood, ... But did not mind as the restaurant was good, also with the view n the ocean.

“This place needs a serious revamp”
We stayed here for 2 nights whilst visiting Yala. The place is situated in a prime spot overlooking the ocean. Unfortunately this place is run down and very poorly maintained. The room was dirty and dusty, there were cockroaches in our room and our driver had to seek alternative accommodation due to bed bugs in the quarters. Food and drink was overpriced and average quality. The "gym" was a joke- machines were broken or hardly working and very limited. No staff manning the pool and the bar was closed. We visited jetwing hotel (next door) for lunch which was a bit more expensive but 10 times better and we wished we stayed there. Their food and drinks were literally half the price compared with our hotel. I can't believe this place has a 4 star rating!

“Good location near to Yala but the food was disappointing”
We were told upon arrival that we had been upgraded room - as we arrived on Valentines Day and we were on our honeymoon, we thought this was a nice touch from management. After showing us to our room, the member of reception staff told us we would be billed for the unrequested upgrade at checkout! Needless to say we disputed this and did not pay. We arranged our safari through the hotel which was good. However the breakfast and lunch packs were sparse and of poor quality compared to what was offered by other hotels and safari companies. The buffet selection at the evening meal was disappointing - the hot food lacked authentic flavour and the bbq on our first night was not great. It was only upon seeing other diners looking at a menu did we realise there was an a la carte option which we had on our second night. Much tastier and far better value for money (we had no idea how expensive the buffet option was until we signed for our bill). Breakfast ok but not as good as others.

“Outstanding location, incredible service, good food and drink!”
We decided to go for a less expensive option in favor of location to the Safari. Laya has exceeded all expectations. The rooms are simple but have magnificent panoramic views of the beach. The pool is simple but well staffed - always someone ready to look after you. The staff have just been the best. They are so friendly and have helped make our stay really special. The place is 10 mins from Safari and the resort organizes everything. Highly recommended!!

“In the middle of the jungle!... in front of the sea!”
Yes that s exactly right in front of the sea and in the middle of the jungle is how i would describe the Laya.. the hotel staff is great.. the manager has been really helpful in multiple occasions.. he changed our room after an accident with "mosquitos".. and the restaurant has really good food considering location is in the middle of nowhere... on the cons side, it must be really hard to maintain such a facility i will give them that, but i think the hotel could/must be better mainteined and cleaned (eg wooden structures are pale and look old, i saw spider webs in multiple places etc). All in all I still suggest it because of the overall experience, i would do it again. A special thanks to the manager for making it much better!

“Quirky buildings on beautiful beachscape”
Exceptional service in the dining room from Upul. Convenient location for safari tours. rooms are multilevel with a sunken living room allowing for views of the ocean from both the bed and the sofa. Lovely pool. We enjoyed our stay.

“Beautiful location for a very relaxing stay”

“Architectural beauty disintegrating ”
When the building was built it must have been fantastic. But it can’t have had any maintenance since day 1. All the doors are warped, so don’t close properly. All metal work is corroded. Water is pouring out around most of the buildings. The lawn is flooded by the sprinklers which are also killing the plants. The perimeter fence is rusty corrugated iron which is breaking of in chunks into the sand. The pathways have massive holes in. The food is OK but the Sri Lankan rice and curry on the lunch menu was the only real star. And the road to it is horrendous. It is such a shame as the styling of the buildinds are beautiful and really stand out from everything else we have seen.

“Hotel needs maintenance. Staff at bar are very slow.”
Staff were friendly but a small pool and nothing really much to do was a pain point. Food was alright.

“Stunning hotel”
Beautiful hotel and surroundings. You can see wildlife round the hotel and it’s close to safari. Very nice staff - a little slow around the pool perhaps but that’s it.

“最高!”
Amazing place ideally situated not far away from the entrance of the Yala park. Surrounded by wilderness with the ocean nearby, a lot of wild animals naturally show up around the hotel. The rooms are amazing and well furnished. It's the perfect place to relax

“Nice view from hotel rooms”
Charming rooms with sea-view balcony where we can see cows and swimming pool area. On first night, we found flying insects crawling on all the walls and tables...and some bit my travel partner. Housekeeping was prompt to come do an insect spray/killing and changing our sheets after thousands of insects fell dead on it. Their advise is to switch off all lights (except one small one) to keep out such insects. Literally walking around room in the dark for both nights we were there. Not likely to return again.

“awesome”
Decided to splurge for our Yala adventure. Great hotel in beautiful location within the national park so only a 10 minute drive to safari entrance. Great staff, amazing food for breakfast buffet and awesome room with comfy beds. Room had a bath with view of the ocean from which we could see dolphins swimming.

“Good hotel near the safari's”
This hotel was satisfactory - it had an amazing location, absolute beachfront with a pool and great views. It was nice and quiet mostly. Room was a decent size, and the bathroom was really cool. The downside was its cleanliness and maintenance. It just looked like it hadnt been maintained well - rust and dirt around the place. The pool was a bit murky and dirty, and two of the other pools weren't even filled. A lot of empty office spaces in the hotel. A lot of glass not cleaned with what looked like streaks and dead insects all over. The blinds in the hotel room were a bit dysfunctional - some didn't go up.

“Loved Laya”
We absolutely loved our stay at Laya. The staff was wonderful The food was really good and they were sweet enough to make a salad which wasn't there on the menu Would highly recommend this place if you are going for the Safari at Yala The view is spectacular and the rooms are tastefully done up The highlight was the service .They do know how to take care of their guests!

“AMAZING!!”
O my gosh this hotel is amazing!! The room/suite is very spacious with a huge bed and a great bath and shower (just remember to close the blind). The swimming pool is breathtaking along with the view of the unspoilt beach. The food -wow, we had buffet each time and it tasted great - breakfast and dinner. There are gym facilities which we used which were great. The staff are great, very friendly and attentive. This hotel was the highlight of my Sri Lanka tour, it was great, photos don't do it justice!

“Shouldnt be missed if planning a safari to Yala”
Wonderful stay for one nite at this hotel. We were impressed by the friendly and attentive staff! Hotel room is great with stunning view overlooking the indian ocean. The pool is also fantastic. We tried menu items for lunch and buffet for dinner. Both are good and we particularly love the shrimp bisque which is amazingly tasty! Staff also kept checking with us throughout the meals. The breakfast, lunch and dinner time of the restaurants is also good enough which is especially important to tourists under situations checking in late. I would recommend ppl to stay here if they are having a safari trip to yala national park

“Saved by the Staff and Location”
This hotel is a victim of its location. Situated by the India Ocean it has fantastic views but takes a battering from the wind and sea-air. It must have been a lovely hotel once but is now tired and tatty. The staff were very attentive, especially Opul who looked after us so well in the restaurant - thank you again Opul. Other staff were very obliging and helpful. Our room overlooked the sea but that is probably the only good point. The a/c worked either freezing col or not at all. The bathroom is large with a bathtub and shower but was a bit dirty and the washbasin was very slow to empty. The sheets and towels were thin and worn and the pillows were lumpy. The food was satisfactory and reasonably priced. There is nowhere else to go to eat. On our first night there were only 4/5 rooms occupied - we arrived at the bar and the lights were off - the barman put lights and a/c on for us. The hotel is in a fabulous location with friendly, helpful staff but it needs a facelift to encourage visitors to return.

“Awesome place”
Really happy we stayed here. Staff was super friendly, the place is absolutely gorgeous, the prices (e.g. Restaurant) are very reasonable... only comments is that the floors/insect situation could have been slightly better but to be honest, you're going to a national park, it's normal. Also the spa wasn't really a spa. Other than that, breathtaking rooms, views and location.

“Great view of beach and sunset”
We enjoyed our stay primarily because of the beautiful view of the beach and sunset directly from our room. There is a great infinity pool. The rooms could use a bit of an upgrade for the price you are paying (tub seemed a little dirty, room was not airtight and felt humid). Also the staff came into our room with tea and coffee while we were inside, which was a little strange. Overall though, I would recommend staying here as it is a nice hotel.

“Nice comfortable luxurious stay”
If you want 5 star luxury this is a nice place. Bit pricy, but friendly staff, good food and perfect rooms. The ocean view is beutiful.

“Great views and attentive staff”
We had a lovely stay at Laya Safari with great views of the ocean and National Park. The pool is great but they need to sought out the gym. Staff were fantastic and food is great. Yes the hotel is a little tired but it all adds to the rustic feel. I would definitely go back.

“Peaceful Getaway with Indian Ocean”
The facility is nice, top-notch, but you can tell it's also a bit worn. The room was in good condition, but just some of the details, blinds needed to be replaced. The loft suite we had was very spacious, loved the layout , with the multi-tier setup. Food was very good - for dinner and breakfast. This is a perfect spot if you want to walk on beaches in solitude - as there are not many people on the beaches due to the harsh waves, it's still very serene, scenic nonetheless. I loved it here, and you're reminded of nature when you look down from the balcony, and there's a cow grazing. Life is beautiful!

“Overrated 5-star hotel”
Staff in the restaurant, location (close to Yala National Park), Laundry ServiceThe hotel manager was extremely impolite when we made feedback on the air-con system in our room which took too long to get cool. We didnt feel very welcomed at the reception that we expected in a 5-star hotel. Staff at reception seemed barely understand English and made some silly mistakes when we checked in. Hotel facilities are very basic and they couldn't even provide Spa service during our stay because their Spa therapist was on leave (I wonder why a 5-star hotel can only afford to employ one Spa therapist and when she is on leave, the total Spa service will be completely shut down). Last but not least, we asked to hotel to help us call Tuk Tuk to travel to Mirissa at 11am on the morning we checked out. Eventually, the Tuk Tuk arrived at 12pm and the hotel staff did not show a little sign of apology for that. Overall, we didn't think the hotel could live up to a 5-star standard.

“Fantastic for safari and chill”
Location for safari, pool and seaviewFantastic. Room was lovely. Great view. Enjoyed safari and chilling by the pool. Rooms were lovely. A little worn but it didn't detract from our stay. Wanted to stay longer.

“Excellent location, good food and service”
Location, food and serviceThe hotel is located bang on the beach with the waves of Indian Ocean lapping the clean white sands. Although the sea is not swimmable (it's deep), there's a infinity swimming pool almost merging into the beach. The rooms are inside these hut-like buildings and are designed with all walls having huge glass windows that overlook the ocean and the pool. This makes the rooms feel big, airy and spacy. The gates of Yala National Park are also close (2 KM) and we even saw an elephant (tusker), deers and rabbits near the hotel premises. The service is good and courteous. The food (we had a-la-carte) was very good, especially the Sri Lankan Wattalappam dessert and curries.

“Great location for Yala National Park.”
Great location. Lovely pool area. Hotel needed maintaining more - blinds were mouldy etc. Buffet massively overpriced for standard of food. No other menu options. No breakfast available after a morning safari. Had to take a breakfast picnic which was poor - asked for a cheese sandwich without the tomato but hotel said no. Just needed more organisation and attention to detail and staff be more willing to accomadate small reasonable requests of guests.
